From renewed independence safeguards to modern approaches to conducting conferences, the IRS’s Independent Office of Appeals continues to evolve to meet its critical mission. This session brings together Appeals’ two most senior officials and leading tax controversy practitioners to engage in a wide-ranging discussion of the current and future states of Appeals. Our panelists will engage in an interactive dialog, covering topics such as, the perceived and actual independence of Appeals, implementation of the Taxpayer First Act, the Appeals Team Case Leader Conferencing Pilot, recent technological advances, and alternative Appeals tools.
At the conclusion of this course, participants should: (1) Have a more informed understanding of the current and future states of Appeals – including an update on the hiring outlook for Appeals; (2) Understand issues that involve Appeals’ perceived and actual independence; (3) Understand how the Taxpayer First Act has impacted Appeals’ operations; (4) Understand the current status of the Appeals Team Case Leader Conferencing Pilot; and (5) Be aware of recent technological advances and alternative Appeals tools.
